Erin Edwards (@EFIE0130) Presents: The Black Milk Live Experience

Words, pic & video all by Ms. Edwards

While it’s quite obvious that live bands dramatically enhance the experience of any performance, their usage is relatively sparse in Hip-Hop. Black Milk’s Album of The Year ranks as a personal favorite from 2010. Its rich, soulful instrumentals were ideal compliments to Black’s very personal and introspective lyrics. Already known for his production work, Black opted to don a musical director cap by implementing and leading a live band in playing his MPC-crafted beats. He not only utilized these musicians – phenomenal drummer Daru Jones, skilled keyboardist AB and Malik Hunter on bass – in the recording process, but also incorporated the band as a mainstay of his live show during the Album Of The Year tour.

Oddisee - Mental Liberation (Deluxe Edition)

Press Release:
After organizing session files on the harddrive, some Oddisee bonus materials from the "Mental Liberation" vaults have been rediscovered. It was such a pleasure finding them, that we decided to post them up and give the entire album and unearthered bonus materials away free all week!

The bonus material includes two instrumentals: one which was previously exclusive to Japanese vinyl is called "Is That Why You're Here?" and is a particularly jazzy track, heavy on the horns; the second is also horn heavy with an irregular drum pattern and is entitled "Revival". The third bonus cut is a track Oddisee produced that Motion Man laid 3 verses over called "Holding It Back".

The Grammy Awards Get It Wrong Again

Normally I don't watch award shows, but with there being no more Sunday Night Football and the fact that 70% of my Twitter timeline would be tweeting about it, I decided to watch the Grammys. I had grown tired of award shows in entertainment in the late 90's or early 2000's. Most of the time none of the artists that I cared about wouldn't sniff a nomination, let alone perform.

At this point I only check for the best rap album to see who got snubbed for a nomination. This year the nominees were Drake's Thank Me Later, Eminem's Recovery, B.o.B.'s The Adventures Of Bobby Ray, Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 & The Roots' How I Got Over.  I had no problem with Eminem winning for Recovery.

I thought it was the best of the available choices.  If I were given run of the Grammy Awards, my nominees would be:

Ghostface Killah - Apollo Kids
Skyzoo & Illmind - Live From The Tape Deck
Meth, Ghost & Rae's - Wu-Massacre
Eminem - Recovery
Black Milk - Album Of The Year

My winner would be Live From The Tape Deck with Black Milk's AOTY a CLOSE second.

If it were up to you, who would've been your nominees and who would you have given the Grammy to?

Thanks for stopping by,

Music Reviews In A Minute: Black Milk - Album Of The Year

I have been kicking around the idea of reviewing music on this site for a while now.  I just was looking for another way to do it than your typical write up with flowery language or overuse of street slang.  I also wanted to do reviews in a way that would be more than just me telling you what I love, but to also give you my perspective along with that of another.  I have certain artists that I love and may give a very bias opinion on, but I want to hopefully counteract that with alternative point of view or at the very least, another point of view.  A Cali girl and a PA guy should be varied enough in points of view, right?

The plan is to review current as well as classic albums in a quick and concise fashion.  I look at the classic albums as a baseline for our tastes in a matter of speaking.  We will be getting to the classic albums soon enough, but first up Dayrell and I will be reviewing Black Milk's Album Of The Year.

Guilty Simpson - Ghettodes

This past year, around the same time Madlib was creating his remix of Guilty Simpson's Ode To The Ghetto for his Madlib Medicine Show #1 release, we had Oh No remix the tracks as well, using samples from the Now-Again catalog. Oh No's collection Ghettodes is not meant as an album, but you put 14 tracks together and you might as well call it that.
